How crowded is your ZIP code?
Look up how many businesses like yours are recorded in any residential ZIP code, per 1,000 households, and see how it compares with nearby ZIPs, your state and the country. Sixteen storefront and office categories, every state. No signup.
How to read the numbers
- Businesses with employees only. Counts cover business locations with paid staff. Self-employed owners aren't included, so every count is a minimum.
- "Fewer than 3 recorded" means no count was published. It can mean one, two, or none.
- Per 1,000 households compares ZIPs of different sizes. Shopping districts rank high because they serve visitors as well as residents.
- Rankings compare a ZIP only with ZIPs of at least 1,000 households that have a published count.
Questions, answered
How many competitors are in my ZIP code?
Type your ZIP and pick your type of business above. The tool shows how many of those businesses were recorded in your ZIP in 2023, how that compares per 1,000 households with the rest of your state and the country, and the same numbers for the nearest ZIP codes.
Why does my ZIP say "fewer than 3 recorded"?
Counts under 3 aren't published for any ZIP and business type, to protect individual businesses. "Fewer than 3 recorded" can mean one, two, or none — it doesn't mean the ZIP has no competition.
Why is the count lower than the businesses I see on a map?
The counts only include businesses with paid employees. Self-employed owners — booth-renting stylists, solo mechanics, independent trainers — aren't included, so every number here is a minimum. It's best used to compare ZIPs with each other, not as an exact head count.
Is a crowded ZIP a bad place to open or advertise?
Not necessarily. Shopping districts and downtowns serve workers and visitors as well as residents, so they rank high per household. Crowding tells you how many competitors share the local market; it doesn't tell you whether demand is met.
